It's all business

I know that it has been a while since I have posted a blog. Going back to what my second blog said, it's really hard to keep up with something that I am not used to. But I'm still trying my best.

Here is an update:

So far in class we are focusing on the area of business that we are interested in and we are now digging and getting a little deeper. A couple classes ago a classmate and I created a poster about the Power Company which is a local dance company that is partly run through our school and the leader of the company is Martha Brim who is one of my dance teachers. The reason we did this project was to explore a business that is similar to what we are interested.

Anyway onto to what are working on right now. We are working on developing a business concept statement that will help explain what exact business that we would like to get involved with or a business that we would like to create.

so here goes nothing.

Rough Draft Business Concept Statement:

My business concept is to a create a production that shows original choreography from local contemporary choreographers in the Columbia, SC area. I would like for the choreographers to range in age and experience. The reason for this production is to work on my promoting skills because I want to work with a mix of dance and public relations. The show will provide experience for local choreographers and an outlet to show there work to the public if they haven't already. This show will be different from other shows because I have personal experience with creating a production and working with choreographers to express the exact image that they are portraying. This show will also be different because it will show personal and original works from maybe newly graduated dance majors or local choreographers that have been in the business for a while. This production will give me the opportunity to work with local artist. I want the show to interest local artists and the public that is interested in performing arts. I think that the show will provide a pleasurable experience to the public. The show will be promoted in many different ways. Of course first off with a press release, posters, and handouts. But I also want to get the community involved. I was thinking about having a silent auction in the lobby of the show to promote other visual artist as well. I think that will provide promotion for the show and for the artists that will hopefully donate their work to be auctioned off at the show. I will provide free PR for the artists that will be donating.

I think that the show would be very successful because it will promote all kinds of artist and it will help fight for the continuation of local art in the community of Columbia.

The Second One - Starting at the Beginning

All of this blog talk is overwhelming me. I feel that if I start all of this (as in keeping up with a blog) that i will be sucked into this world that is never ending and will take over my life. I want to get my word out and express to people that i am very interested in the arts and promoting positive views of the dance world and culture. But i feel that its just an idea for a class. i want to eventually work with PR and dance once i graduate but starting a blog with a specific idea is kind of scary. I can be a very organized person but when it comes to keeping up with a blog i will be scared that i wont be posting enough information to get my name out there or i will post too much and overwhelm other people. But i will do my best and try to start from the beginning. I have been dancing for almost 16 years. When it was time for me to pick a college in state after i graduated, Columbia College was one of the only colleges i found that had an amazing dance program. Once i was accepted and given a dance scholarship, it was a done deal. I decided to attend. Once you become a dance major at Columbia College you are apart of the Columbia College Dance Company. Over the semesters that you attend you learn so many things about dance. One of the experiences that i have enjoyed is running our own dance shows. We have an executive board in the dance company where 10-12 people have their own specific roles in the company. It helps us stay organized and get our shows done in a timely manner. Since my junior year i have been the public relations coordinator for the Columbia College Dance Company. I love it. I think it is definitely one of the main reasons why i am very interested in public relations and promoting positive views about dance. I love creating the posters and press releases and getting the word out about our awesome shows that we produce. Through this business i am learning ways to work towards my final goal. Im excited to learn more and to discover more ways to get my word out there.

The First One

I'm very interested in promoting art, specifically dance. I would love to have my own personal small PR company to promote positive views of dance. But I would also love to manage or just work for a Public Relations company. And that is what I am focusing on in my business class.
